Holler At Me Presentation

Large group presentations from 2 - 3 MIMIC Members about their personal stories, experiences, and lessons learned (1hr). All presentations are followed by 1 hr breakout sessions that give youth an opportunity to interact with the speakers and openly discuss the topics to which they most relate. This presentation would be appropriate for a small group of students (15 for example) to a full school assembly of several hundred students.

MIMIC Challenge

The MIMIC Challenge is a 12 week curriculum that covers various topics (many which are listed below in the individual workshop section) such as: Social Skills, Life Skills, Coping Strategies, Self Esteem, Positive Decision Making, Bullying, and Self Reflection. The MIMIC Challenge is a very good follow-up to the Holler At Me Presentation. The MIMIC Challenge is also an excellent and effective diversion program for young folks at risk for further disciplinary action. The maximum number of students that should participate in a MIMIC Challenge group is approximately 20 students. The 12-week curriculum includes:

  • Holler At Me Presentation
  • 12 weeks of Curriculum during the school day or after school
  • One-on-one mentoring for students
  • Student invitation to participate in Jr. MIMIC programming that will involve them further in MIMIC activities through High School Graduation
  • 1-2 field trips
  • An offsite Graduation Ceremony for students who complete the challenge (Teachers and Parents will be invited! And food will be served)

Or, you may select from the following individual items

  • Curriculum Delivery during the week day in school or after school. 12 sessions, 1.5 hrs each
  • MIMIC Challenge Curriculum Delivery on Saturdays 4-6 sessions, 6 hrs each
  • MIMIC Mentor Field Trip - Options include: Temple University, Cradle to the Grave program, boxing gym - martial arts training, Local Cultural Arts Activities. (Includes: chaperones, activity costs, transportation, and food for approximately 15 - 20 students) Full day trips and activities
  • Off-site MIMIC Challenge Graduation Ceremony: Will be located at a restaurant or cafe with invitations to parents, teachers, etc. to celebrate this accomplishment with a significant party/luncheon, etc.

Individual Workshops**

Custom designed to fit the needs of your students. All sessions are 2 hrs and could be facilitated in the morning or afternoon. Two MIMIC members will attend.

Workshops address the following topics:

  • Life skills, social skills and coping strategies
  • Positive decision-making and self-esteem
  • Bullying
  • Self-reflection, oneself in the context of his community and learning about the social, cultural economic and political realities of community and society.
  • “Know Your Rights” in the context of police interactions and systemsnavigation

**Please note all workshop presentations and packages are designed for adolescent males ages 12-24

The workshops below are titled in a way that youth can relate to; and in parenthesis is the more literal description of the workshop or overall learning objective.

Am I a Bully? (Anti-Bullying Workshop)

In this Lesson students will learn the characteristics of bullying, and the behaviors which contribute or promote bullying. Students will be able to identify the roles people play during a bullying incident and students will be able to use techniques to avoid being bullied and being a bully.

Stay Cool! (Composure)

In this lesson, students will learn what steps to take to identify and resolve potential conflicts and self care techniques to use instead of using violence as a source of resolution. Students will learn the difference between harmful learned behaviors and behaviors that are innate to every human being, in addition to exploring the concept of consequences to actions. Students will talk about how a “daily routine,” time management, and self organization can alleviate stressors.

How you Feel’n? (Self-Esteem)

In this lesson, students will gain understanding about how we construct our self images and how issues revolving around self image relate to overall self-esteem. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify factors that contribute to a positive self image and self esteem.

Is it worth it? (Decision Making Skills)

This lesson will explore the options of communication which will help students to balance positive and negative outcomes in decision making. Students will receive tools to demonstrate decision making in difficult situations and weigh positive and negative outcomes.

“What’s Up?”...or “Hello” (Proper Etiquette and Social Skills)

In this lesson, students will learn the difference between improper etiquette and proper etiquette, and why it is important to use proper etiquette.

Snitching vs. Speaking Up (Accountability)

In this lesson, students will learn the difference between positive speaking up and the street term snitching. Students will demonstrate the ability to: speak Up for themselves; speak Up to protect themselves and others; speak Up for what they believe and show confidence when speaking up.

Check Yourself (How to conduct yourself at a police stop)

The purpose of this program is to introduce techniques to youth on how to conduct themselves when confronted or approached by a police officer. Youth will talk about mutual respect and how to build and maintain a positive relationship with law enforcement.

Language Access for Professional Development

This workshop is designed for school organizational staff and youth or development workers to learn how to advocate for the rights of their Spanish speaking clients and families.
